Your rental bathroom deserves better
No renovation. No lost deposit. No reason to keep living with that shower curtain.
A few temporary fixes can do a suspicious amount of heavy lifting.

Rental bathrooms have a special talent for making you question every decision made between 1997 and 2012.
The tiny mirror. The chrome towel rail. The lighting that makes everyone look mildly unwell. And, of course, the mysterious beige tile that apparently came standard with every rental property for twenty years.
But ugly tiles do not get the final say.
You might not be allowed to rip anything out, but you can distract from it, soften it and surround it with things you actually like. Sometimes that’s enough to make the whole room feel intentional.
You don’t have to own the bathroom to give it some personality.
01 · Fix the lighting
Because nobody needs interrogation-room lighting
Before blaming the tiles, look up. Bad lighting can make even a beautiful bathroom feel cold.
If you can safely change the bulb, choose a warmer temperature. If the room has enough space and suitable electrical safety, add another approved light source rather than relying entirely on one harsh ceiling light.
Good lighting won’t replace the bathroom, but it can make everything already in it look significantly more expensive.

The bathroom equivalent of turning off the big light.
02 · Upgrade the textiles
Your shower curtain is basically a wall
Which means it deserves more consideration than we usually give it.
Swap thin plastic for something with texture. Choose towels you would happily leave on display. Add a bath mat that looks like it belongs in the room rather than something bought because it was next to the checkout.
In a small bathroom, textiles take up a surprising amount of visual space. Use that to your advantage.
03 · Give the sink some help
Decant the ugly stuff
A beautiful bathroom can survive a toothbrush. It struggles more with seven brightly coloured bottles fighting for attention around the sink.
A soap dispenser, a little tray, a ceramic cup and one good-looking container can calm the entire surface down. Keep the things you use every day within reach and hide the rest.
It sounds almost offensively simple. Unfortunately, it works.
Casa Mellow house rule: packaging is allowed to be ugly. It just doesn’t have to stay on display.

Small things doing a lot of work.
Refillable dispensers
Because brightly coloured shampoo bottles don’t need to be part of the decor. A matching set instantly makes the shower feel calmer and more put together.

The little tray
One small tray can turn a collection of everyday products into something that looks intentional. Soap, perfume, skincare — put it together and suddenly it’s styling.

04 · Bring in something that isn’t bathroom-y
Treat it like an actual room
One of the easiest ways to make a bathroom feel considered is to put something in it that wasn’t specifically designed for a bathroom.
A little wooden stool. A framed print placed safely away from water. A vintage-looking mirror. A woven basket. A ceramic vase with a branch in it.
These are the things that stop a bathroom from feeling like a collection of sanitary equipment and start making it feel like part of your home.
Distract from what you can’t change. Make the rest very pretty.
05 · Hide what you don’t want to see
Storage is part of the aesthetic
There is no styling trick powerful enough to make a pile of toilet rolls, cleaning spray and half-used hair products look intentional.
Baskets are your friend. So are boxes, trays, hooks and anything else that can be removed again when you move out.
The aim isn’t minimalism. You’re simply deciding which objects deserve to be part of the room.
06 · Work with the ugly thing
Sometimes fighting it makes it worse
If your bathroom has beige tiles, adding stark grey and bright white probably won’t make them disappear. It might just make the beige look even more beige.
Instead, repeat some of its warmth. Add wood, cream, muted green, burgundy or dusty terracotta. Suddenly the tile looks less like a problem and more like part of a palette.
You didn’t choose it. Nobody needs to know that.
Better, without becoming your landlord’s problem
Change the towels. Hide the bottles. Add some wood. Find a better mirror if your rental allows it. Put your soap in something unnecessarily nice.
Then save the marble renovation for the house you actually own.
Your rental bathroom deserves better.
